I discovered that Maternity Photography didn’t exist really when my parents were having kids. In fact, as I was speaking to my own mum she explained that women would do everything they could to hide their bump under oversized clothing. How times have changed! Now we look around and celebrities (and even us normal people) do all we can to show off our glorious bump.
So it is not surprising that Maternity Photography has only increased in popularity over the last few years and is fast changing from a luxury, to a standard investment when preparing for your newborn baby.
I became a Brisbane Motherhood and Maternity photographer after the arrival of my firstborn and never took professional maternity photos. When I started photographing other pregnant mamas I became a little bit jealous and realised what I had missed out on. And so it was on the top of my to-do list when I was pregnant with my second.
Here are the three top reasons to book a Maternity Photographer for your pregnancy!
1. For the Memories
Whether you are pregnant once in your life, or multiple times, there’s only a finite amount of time that you spend carrying your children. And if you’re like me and not really a selfie person (I just forget!) or your partner just isn’t great with taking photos of you, your pregnancy can zoom by with barely any photographic proof at all!
I’m personally fresh in my postpartum period (I welcomed baby Duke only 2 weeks ago!) and I already forget how that glorious bump feels. I personally believe it is a trick that our body plays on us to ensure we go back for more kids, and populate the Earth haha. Whether pregnancy was easy, or tough, there is something magical about feeling your baby move for the first time, seeing them on the sonographer’s screen, hiccups, and that feeling of bonding before you have even met them.
The time you spend with your bump is soooo nostalgic and you will love looking back on those times for all the years to come.
However the memories are not only for yourself, but to share with your baby boy or baby girl as they grow, and once they are grown. And leaving heirloom portraiture to pass down to your children’s children. You are documenting your family life in a way which is crystal clear (high-res, baby!) and dreamy.
2. Maternity Photography Celebrates your Body
Okay can we just take a moment to ponder that us women can GROW HUMANS!? In our Bodies?! It never ceases to amaze me the changes that our bodies go through during pregnancy.
Taking Maternity Photos honours the changes that your body goes through during pregnancy and helps you think about your body with gratitude. If you’re pregnant for the first time you may find this hard to believe, but you will miss that bump!
3. Feel Amazing
Not everyone feels amazing during pregnancy. And most women experience self-conscious thoughts about how they look and feel when they are pregnant. From swollen ankles, to new colours and squiggles appearing on your skin, perhaps hormonal skin breakouts or more weight appearing in random spots around your body.
It also doesn’t help if you (or the person taking a photo for you on your phone) doesn’t have great photography skills. It can leave you with photographs that are un-flattering and make you feel even worse about yourself 🙁 When I, as a professional Maternity Photographer, am photographing women I understand how to ‘put you in the best light’ (pun intended!). I understand lighting, angles, gentle posing, movement, wardrobe, location and styling as well as how to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed in your session. Yes, it is absolutely possible! And most of my pregnant clients say that they felt so much less awkward in their session than they thought – and even had a great time!
And then they see the photos…. and LOVE them.
I promise you, it is worth the investment to document your pregnancy.
