A simple, reassuring guide for mamas in Springfield, Ipswich, and Brisbane who just want to feel comfortable and confident

If you’ve booked your newborn session, or you’re thinking about it, there’s usually one question that bubbles up pretty quickly:

“What on earth am I going to wear?”

And when you’re already navigating life with a newborn, sleep-deprived, recovering, and just trying to get through each day, even thinking about outfits can feel like too much.

So let me take some of that weight off your shoulders right now.

You don’t need to figure this out alone. And it doesn’t need to be complicated.

You Don’t Need a “Perfect” Outfit for Newborn Photos

There’s often this quiet pressure to find something that hides everything you want hidden, flatters every angle, and somehow feels like you but a better version. And that’s a lot to ask of one outfit, especially in the postpartum stage.

The truth is, what photographs beautifully in newborn sessions has nothing to do with perfection. It has everything to do with:

  • Softness
  • Movement
  • Comfort
  • The way the fabric feels when you’re holding your baby close

That’s what creates those natural, connected images. Not the outfit itself, but the feeling inside it.

Comfort Always Comes First

Your body is doing a lot right now. Growing, healing, adjusting. So whatever you wear to your newborn session needs to feel gentle, easy, and completely unfussy.

The pieces that tend to photograph most beautifully for postpartum mamas are:

  • Flowy dresses – soft and flattering, they move naturally and don’t restrict
  • Soft knits – cosy and tactile, especially lovely for cooler sessions
  • Loose, breathable fabrics – nothing that feels tight or makes you want to adjust

If you’re going to be cuddling, feeding, and settling your baby throughout the session, and you will be, you want to feel completely at ease in what you’re wearing. Because when you’re comfortable, it genuinely shows in the images.

What Colours Work Best for Newborn Photography?

You don’t need bold colours or busy patterns. In fact, the most timeless newborn photos, the ones that still feel beautiful a decade later, almost always feature:

  • Creamy whites
  • Warm neutrals
  • Soft earthy and blush tones
  • Gentle textures like linen, muslin, and ribbed knit

These tones keep the focus where it belongs, on the connection between you and your baby. They don’t compete with your little one, and they create that calm, cohesive feel that makes newborn images feel like art.

Avoid anything with large logos, bold graphics, or very busy prints. Simple always photographs better.

You Don’t Have to Buy Anything New

Please don’t feel like you need to go shopping before your session. You might already have something in your wardrobe that works perfectly, a soft cream dress, a flowy linen top, a favourite knit.

But if you LOVE a chance to shop, let me recommend some of my favourites for Newborn Sessions:

And if you don’t? I’ve got you.

Every newborn session at my Spring Mountain Newborn Photography studio includes access to a curated client wardrobe, with pieces chosen specifically for the postpartum body. Flattering, comfortable, and designed to photograph beautifully. So instead of standing in a fitting room second-guessing yourself, you can arrive knowing there’s something here waiting for you.

This is one of the things my Springfield, Ipswich, and Brisbane clients tell me they’re most grateful for. It takes one more thing completely off their plate.

What Should Partners and Siblings Wear?

Keep it simple and cohesive. You’re aiming for a gentle, harmonious feel rather than perfectly “matchy-matchy.”

For partners: Neutral or muted tones work best, think soft grey, white, cream, or warm beige. Avoid anything logo-heavy or brightly coloured. A simple linen shirt or plain tee photographs beautifully.

For siblings: Dress them in similar tones to you. Comfortable is key, they’ll be moving, sitting on the floor, and cuddling their new baby brother or sister. Easy-to-move-in pieces in soft colours keep everything looking cohesive without feeling forced.

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Wear for Newborn Photos

What do I wear for newborn photos if I’m still in the postpartum stage? Soft, flowy pieces in neutral tones are your best friend. Think cream dresses, linen wraps, and soft knits. Avoid anything tight or structured, because comfort creates confidence, and confidence creates beautiful images.

Do I need to match my baby for newborn photos? Not at all. Your baby will likely be wrapped in soft studio fabrics or posed naturally. Neutral tones on you will complement whatever your baby is wearing without clashing.

Can I use your client wardrobe instead of bringing my own outfit? Absolutely. My studio in Spring Mountain, conveniently located for families across Springfield, Springfield Lakes, Ipswich, and the broader Brisbane south-west, has a curated selection of pieces available for every session. Just let me know your size and preferences beforehand and we’ll have something ready.

What if I don’t feel comfortable in my body right now? That’s incredibly normal, and it’s something I hear from almost every mama before their session. My job is to photograph you in a way that feels natural and gentle, not to make you perform for a camera. You don’t need to feel confident to have beautiful photos.

Where is your newborn photography studio located? I’m based in Spring Mountain, right in the heart of Springfield, making it an easy drive for families across Ipswich, Springfield Lakes, Ripley, Redbank Plains, and surrounding areas. I also offer select outdoor sessions at scenic locations across the Brisbane south-west region.

It’s Okay If You Don’t Feel Like Yourself Yet

This part matters, because sometimes the question about what to wear isn’t really about clothes at all.

It’s about feeling unsure in a body that’s changed. Not quite recognising yourself yet. Wondering if you’ll look “okay” in photos when you don’t feel okay in yourself.

No outfit magically fixes that feeling. But what I can do is guide you gently, photograph you in a way that feels honest and soft, and help you see yourself through a kinder lens than the one you might be using right now.

What Your Baby Will See One Day

Your baby isn’t going to remember what you wore.

But one day, they’ll look at these photos and see:

  • How you held them like they were the most precious thing in the world
  • How close you always kept them
  • How much love was already quietly there

That’s what these photos are really about. The outfit is just the beginning.
