A reassuring read for Brisbane and Gold Coast mamas worried about booking their newborn session

If you’ve been thinking about booking newborn photos, there’s a good chance this thought has crossed your mind, probably somewhere around 2am… I know because I’m currently a newborn mama who has anxious thoughts pop up in the middle of the night also.

“What if my baby doesn’t sleep for their photos?”

And not just that. What if they cry the whole time? What if they need feeding constantly? What if it all feels a bit… chaotic?

Suddenly, something that felt like a beautiful idea starts to feel a little stressful. And you find yourself wondering whether to wait until they’re more settled, until you feel more ready, until things feel a little more predictable.

So let me gently reassure you: your baby doesn’t need to sleep for your newborn photos to be beautiful.

The “Perfectly Sleepy Newborn” Idea Is a Little Misleading

You’ve probably seen those deeply asleep, curled-up newborn photos, and they are stunning. But they’re not the only way to capture this season. And they’re not something you should feel pressure to recreate.

Because real life with a newborn looks like:

  • Little stretches and squirmy arms
  • Wide, curious eyes taking in the world for the first time
  • Needing mum close — always
  • Feeding, settling, cuddling… and repeating

That’s not something we need to control during your session. It’s something we can lean into and it makes for some of the most candid, heartfelt newborn photography you’ll ever see.

Awake Babies Make Beautiful Newborn Photos Too

This is one of the most important things I want mamas to know before their Brisbane or Gold Coast newborn session: an awake baby is not a problem. It’s not a sign that something is going wrong. It’s just your baby, being exactly who they are.

Some of the most treasured images I’ve ever captured came from babies who were:

  • Gazing around the room with those brand-new eyes
  • Snuggled into their mama’s chest, listening to her heartbeat
  • Gripping a finger so tightly it makes your heart ache
  • Slowly, softly settling in their parent’s arms

These moments feel real because they are. Not posed, not forced, not manufactured for a camera. Just honest.

So if your baby is wide awake, we don’t panic. We follow their lead.

There Is No Rush, No Pressure, and No “Failing” a Newborn Session

One of the most common worries I hear from mamas booking newborn photography in Brisbane is: “What if I can’t get my baby to cooperate?”

But here’s the truth, your baby doesn’t need to cooperate. They just need to be a baby.

Every newborn session I offer is intentionally slow and flexible. We pause when we need to. We feed when we need to. We cuddle as long as we need to. There is no clock you’re racing against, and absolutely nothing you need to “get right.”

You are not being graded on how well your newborn performs. You’re simply being witnessed in one of the most tender, fleeting seasons of your entire life.

You Don’t Need to Prepare Perfectly

Another question I get a lot: “How do I prepare my baby for a newborn session?”

The honest answer is: you don’t need to overthink it.

I will provide you with a few suggestions prior to your session. However they are just that, suggestions, and we all know that babies are completely unpredictable and we will go with the flow.

I’ll send you gentle guidance before your session, the kind that feels supportive, not like a list of things to get wrong.

Tip for Brisbane and Gold Coast mamas: Newborn sessions are best scheduled within the first 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies are naturally sleepier and more flexible to gentle posing. I recommend booking during your pregnancy to hold your preferred date, as spots fill quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography

What if my baby cries the whole time? It happens sometimes and it’s completely okay. Crying is communication, not failure. We take breaks, we settle, we feed, and we try again. Most sessions find their rhythm once your baby feels safe and warm. Like I said, I have three kids (and currently one of them is a newborn), so it doesn’t worry or concern me when a bub is crying.

Do newborn photos have to be taken while the baby is asleep? Not at all. Awake newborn photos can be just as beautiful and often feel even more connected. The goal is always to capture your baby as they genuinely are.

How long does a newborn session take? My newborn sessions in Springfield are unhurried by design typically one to 1.5 hours, which gives plenty of time for feeds, nappy changes, and settling. You will never feel rushed.

When should I book a newborn photographer in Brisbane? Ideally during your second trimester. Newborn sessions are in high demand across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and booking early means your date is secured before your baby arrives.

What if my baby is past the newborn stage? It’s not too late. While the first two weeks are ideal, I can often still work with babies of any age. They will never be as young as they are now. So please don’t hold off thinking you have ‘missed it’ – or you actually will x

This Season Isn’t About Perfection. It’s About Remembering

When you look back on these photos in ten years, you won’t be thinking: “Was my baby asleep the whole time?”

You’ll be remembering:

  • How impossibly tiny they felt in your arms
  • The way they fit perfectly against your chest
  • How new and overwhelming and beautiful everything was

That’s what matters. That’s what I’m here to capture.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’ve been holding off because you’re worried your baby won’t “behave”, you don’t need to wait until things feel more predictable.

This stage the unpredictable, tender, in-between is exactly what’s worth capturing. And I’ll hold the space for you through all of it.
