If you’ve found yourself standing in front of your wardrobe thinking “I have nothing to wear”, you’re not alone. I have so many mamas asking for tailored guidance before their photoshoot – and I am soooo happy to help guide! Honestly, it does make a big difference to the final photographs in terms of feel, colour, style and even you confidence! It matters.
The right outfits help your photos feel timeless, connected and true to you. Not stiff, not awkward, and definitely not cheesy. This guide is here to gently guide you (not overwhelm you) so you can arrive at your session feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to soak up the moment.

Start With a Colour Palette (Not Individual Outfits)
Before choosing specific pieces, choose a colour palette.
I always recommend:
- Neutral base colours: cream, beige, taupe, white, soft grey, black
- Plus 2–3 accent colours layered throughout the family
✨ Pro tip: Look at your location. Are we near water? Trees? Neutral studio tones? Pull colours from the environment itself for a beautifully cohesive look.
Popular Colour Palettes & the Feeling They Create
Neutral Tones
Timeless, classic and sophisticated. These tones photograph beautifully in any setting and keep the focus on you, not your clothes.

Earth Tones
Warm, grounded and inviting. Perfect for outdoor sessions and especially stunning in autumn light.

Pastels
Soft, dreamy and gentle. A beautiful choice for spring and summer sessions, especially with newborns.

Warm Tones
Cosy, joyful and emotive. Gorgeous for golden-hour light and winter sessions in Brisbane.

Mama First (Always)
This is my biggest rule: start with YOU.
Choose something that makes you feel like yourself. Not hidden, not restricted, not constantly adjusting.
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully and allow movement, connection and softness in your images. Long or bell-shaped sleeves are incredibly flattering (you’re welcome 😉), and natural fabrics like linen and cotton move so nicely on camera.
You’re also welcome to borrow something from my Curated Client Closet, which is designed specifically to flatter mamas and photograph beautifully in my style.
Once you’re styled, build the rest of the family around your outfit.
Compliment, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit.
Instead of matching, aim to compliment:
- Different shades within the same palette
- A mix of textures (linen, knits, denim)
- Soft patterns paired with solid pieces
This creates visual interest while still feeling connected and avoids that “everyone’s in uniform” look.
Dress for the Weather (Especially in Brisbane)
Brisbane weather can be unpredictable, and comfort is everything, especially for little ones.
If kids or babies are too hot or too cold, sessions can quickly unravel. Think layers in winter and breathable fabrics in summer.
For cooler months:
- Light knits
- Layers you can remove
- Neutral jackets or cardigans

For warmer months:
- Loose, breathable fabrics
- Bare feet where appropriate
- Avoid heavy synthetics

Comfort always photographs better than fashion alone.
What to Wear for Newborn Photos
For studio newborn sessions, outfits aren’t necessary for baby. I provide wraps and styling that align with my natural, timeless aesthetic.
For parents:
- Neutral, soft tones
- Comfortable clothing that allows cuddling and movement
- Avoid anything tight or restrictive
For family sessions with newborns, keep outfits practical and simple. Rompers are wonderful for babies, and nappy covers work beautifully.
And always bring a spare outfit! You may thank me later.
Styling Little Ones
When it comes to toddlers and kids, practicality wins.
Choose outfits that:
- Allow movement
- Don’t require constant adjusting
- Feel comfortable on their bodies
Rompers, soft dresses, relaxed shorts and neutral tees work far better than finicky layers or stiff fabrics.
Happy kids = relaxed photos.

Patterns, Logos & Texture
Can I hear a collective “no to the logo”?
Logos, slogans and bold branding pull attention away from what matters most, Connection, and can quickly date your images.
Instead, add interest through:
- Subtle patterns
- Linen, knits, gauze or ribbed fabrics
- Texture rather than print
This keeps your photos feeling timeless and elevated.
You Do You
This guide is here to support you not box you in.
These photos are for you to remember the years by. Not to impress social media. Not to fit a mould. Not to look like anyone else.
You want to recognise yourselves when you look back at these images years from now. The way you laughed, held your babies, showed up as you were in this season.
If something feels like you, we can make it work.
